Hello, my name is Kishan Tongrao, and like many of us, I find myself drawn to the idea of living a simpler, more traditional lifestyle. In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, the allure of traditional practices like gardening, cooking, and spending time in nature can be strong. At the same time, it’s important to recognize the benefits that technology has brought to our lives, including increased convenience, access to information, and improved communication.

In this article, we’ll explore the appeal of traditional living in a high-tech world and how we can find a balance between the two. We’ll discuss the reasons why traditional living practices are becoming increasingly popular, from the desire for a slower pace of life to a deeper connection to nature and community. We’ll also examine the benefits that technology has brought to our lives and how we can use it to enhance, rather than detract from, our traditional living practices.

In today’s modern world, technology is everywhere, from smartphones and computers to high-speed internet and social media. While technology has undoubtedly made our lives more convenient and connected, it’s not uncommon to find ourselves yearning for a simpler way of life, one that’s more connected to nature and rooted in tradition.

As John Muir, the famous naturalist, once said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” Many people today are rediscovering the importance of nature in their lives and seeking to connect with it more closely through traditional living practices.

One of the main reasons for the appeal of traditional living is a desire for a slower pace of life. As Albert Einstein once said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Today’s fast-paced society can often make us feel like we’re fish trying to climb a tree, putting pressure on us to constantly produce and connect. Traditional living can provide a respite from this pressure, allowing us to focus on activities like gardening, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

Another reason for the appeal of traditional living is a desire for a deeper connection to nature. As Rachel Carson, the author of “Silent Spring,” once wrote, “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” Traditional living practices, like gardening, foraging, or simply spending time in nature, can provide a way to reconnect with the natural world and find strength and meaning in its beauty.

In addition to a slower pace of life and a deeper connection to nature, traditional living can also provide a sense of community and connection to our roots. As Margaret J. Wheatley, a writer and consultant, once said, “Without community, there is no liberation.” Traditional living can provide a way to build stronger connections with others and find a sense of belonging and purpose that is often lacking in modern society.

That being said, it’s important to recognize the benefits that technology has brought to our lives, including increased convenience, access to information, and improved communication. As Jaron Lanier, a computer scientist and philosopher, once wrote, “Technology is not inherently good or bad, it is what we make of it.” While it’s natural to yearn for simpler times, it’s also important to find a balance between traditional living and modern technology. Whether it’s through incorporating more traditional practices into our daily lives or taking breaks from technology to reconnect with nature and community, we can find ways to embrace the best of both worlds.

Ways to Find Balance between Traditional Living and Modern Technology

  1. Set aside time for traditional practices: Make a conscious effort to set aside time each week to engage in traditional practices like gardening, cooking, or spending time in nature. This can help you feel more connected to the natural world and create a sense of balance in your life.
  2. Use technology to enhance traditional practices: While technology can be a distraction, it can also be a useful tool for traditional living. Use apps to identify plants and animals while hiking, search for new traditional recipes, or connect with other like-minded individuals in online communities.
  3. Limit technology use during traditional activities: When engaging in traditional practices, try to limit your use of technology. For example, leave your phone inside while gardening or cooking, and focus on being fully present in the moment.
  4. Create a technology-free zone: Designate a specific area in your home, such as a reading nook or meditation space, as a technology-free zone. This can help you disconnect from technology and create a calming, peaceful environment.
  5. Integrate traditional practices into your daily routine: Look for ways to integrate traditional practices into your daily routine, such as taking a walk in nature during your lunch break or cooking a traditional meal for dinner once a week. This can help you feel more connected to the natural world and create a sense of balance in your daily life.

In conclusion, traditional living can provide a valuable antidote to the fast-paced, high-tech world we live in today. By connecting with nature, slowing down, and building stronger communities, we can find a sense of meaning and purpose that is often lacking in modern society. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, let us not forget the wisdom and beauty of traditional ways of living.
